Friday evening, the Washing Metropolitan Area was hit with a weather event called a Derecho. This strong line of storms moves very quickly and produces very high winds gusting to Hurricane strength. The PG area had wind gusts recorded at 80+mph. These storms caused wide spread damage and power outages, initially 1.2 million without power, throughout the area.
With no electricity in the firehouse (no A/C) and heat indices of 100+ degrees, the crews from Berwyn Heights responded to over 70 calls in the hours following the storms. Calls included multiple box alarms, working fires, technical rescues, wrecks, and of course wire investigations.
