Extrication – I-95 / Powder Mill Rd – 15 September 2007

Around a quarter past 1 PM, Public Safety Communications received multiple phone calls reporting a serious motor vehicle accident on I-95 in the area of Powder Mill Road involving two tractor trailers, multiple cars, and reports of people trapped with possible fatalities.

At 1316 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted along with other units in the area on the rescue local to southbound I-95 at Powder Mill Road for the personal injury accident.  Engine 411 was first arriving and reported a multiple vehicle accident involving vehicles on both northbound and southbound I-95, with one trapped on the northbound side.

Rescue Squad 14 with 6 volunteers, Chief 14 (Fusco), and Chief 14A (McCoy) arrived and found an SUV with heavy rear-end damage and one trapped.  The squad crew quickly stabilized the car.  Next, the two driver’s side doors and B-post were removed to provide patient access.  The patient was loaded into an awaiting medic unit and transported to a local trauma center.

In total, six vehicles were involved including two tractor trailers and eight patients.  Additionally, Hazmat 30 was requested due to a leaking saddle tank on a tractor trailer.  Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 1344 hours from their third extrication in 8 hours.
