MVA Greenbelt Rd / Baltimore-Washington Parkway 5 October 2007
At 0333 hours, Rescue Squad 14 was alerted to Greenbelt Road at the Baltimore-Washington Parkway for the personal injury accident. Units arrived to find a trash truck that veered off the road, striking a utility pole and bringing down power lines across Greenbelt Road, and finally colliding with a retaining wall where it came to a stop.
Rescue Squad 14 arrived and was advised there was one trapped. With limited vehicle access due to down power lines, the squad crew carried a simo pump and hydraulic tools over to the trash truck. Once at the truck, it was discovered that the driver was not trapped but would need a medic unit, and additional hazmat resources would be needed due to leaking diesel fuel from the truck’s saddle tank.
The squad crew continued to operate on the scene assisting EMS with patient care, and aiding the hazmat crews with cleanup of the large amount of diesel fuel. Rescue Squad 14 was ready for service at 0501 hours.
