High Angle Rescue- Old Glenn Dale Hospital
April 18th- Rescue Squad 14 and its volunteer crew were alerted for the high-angle rescue at the abandoned Glenn Dale Hospital. First arriving units had an injured subject who fell 30-40 feet down an elevator shaft. Due to the dilapidated conditions in the building, normal means of accessing the elevator shaft weren’t possible.
Upon arrival, Squad 14 worked with Squad 6 to develop primary and backup rescue plans. The crew of Squad 14 worked to bring necessary equipment to the top floor of the building. Squad 14 then worked to setup the Arizona Vortex and a twin tension rope system to lower a rescuer to the victim. The rescuer from Squad 6 then used saws to remove debris from the victim so they could be packaged to be brought back up. Squad 14 operated the mechanical advantage rope system to bring the victim and rescuer back up.
The victim was then carried out using the stokes basket to awaiting EMS crews. The victim was transported to a local trauma center by MSP Aviation. Squad 14 operated for around 2 hours.
