Step 1: Fill Out The Online Application
It all starts with the online application.  Fill out the online application and submit it.  The form will go to our membership coordinator who will review and contact you within 3-5 business days.

Step 2: Contacted By Recruiter & Ride Along
When the membership coordinator reviews your submitted online application, they will review it, and send along the full application for completion as well as schedule a ride along.

Step 3: In-Person Interview
Once we have your full application and you’ve completed the ride along, the membership coordinator will schedule an interview/meeting with the membership committee at the station. This will be done at a time that is convenient for you.

Step 4: Voted In
After your in-person interview with the membership coordinator, you will be up for a vote at the next upcoming monthly business meeting.

Step 5: Medical Physical & Background Check
Once voted in by the membership at the monthly business meeting, the membership coordinator will provide you with information to schedule and complete both the Prince Georges County Fire Department medical physical and background check.

Step 6: Volunteer Recruit School
Once you have successfully completed your medical physical and background check, you will be provided with a Prince Georges County Fire Department ID number.  This ID number allows you to sign-up for Volunteer Recruit School (VRS), a class required by all volunteer firefighters in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Step 7: BHVFD Mentorship
After successful completion of PGFD Volunteer Recruit School, you will be paired with a senior firefighter or EMT to begin the “BHVFD Training Packet” which will orient you to the fire & EMS equipment and SOP’s.  During this time you will be allowed to ride on apparatus in addition to responding on emergency calls.

Step 8: Aditional Fire & EMS Classes
With VRS completed you can sign up for additional Fire & EMS specific classes provided by the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute and other Fire & EMS training centers.

Step 7: BHVFD Mentorship
With your PGFD ID Number, you will be paired with a senior firefighter or EMT to learn the inner workings of the department and assign you to tasks that you are comfortable performing.
